St George's Newsletter, April 10th

Weekly Newsletter

April 10th, 2026

A Note from Rev. Heather

Alleluia Christ is Risen!

Dear St George’s - it is a joy and an honour to celebrate Eastertide together!

Our Lord lives and in living calls us into everlasting life.

So many exciting things are happening and I encourage you to give this week’s newsletter a thorough read for ways to get involved.

This is a lovely time of year - so I thought I’d take the opportunity to share a lovely poem. Like last week the poet is George Herbert. However, where last week called us into the depths and out again, this one calls us into the everlasting, undimmed, nature of Easter Hope:

Easter

Rise heart; thy lord is risen. Sing his praise

Without delayes,

Who takes thee by the hand, that thou likewise

With him mayst rise:

That, as his death calcinèd thee to dust,

His life may make thee gold, and much more just.

Awake, my lute, and struggle for thy part

With all thy art,

The crosse taught all wood to resound his name

Who bore the same.

His stretchèd sinews taught all strings, what key

Is best to celebrate this most high day.

Consort, both heart and lute, and twist a song

Pleasant and long;

Or since all musick is but three parts vied,

And multiplied;

O let thy blessèd Spirit bear a part,

And make up our defects with his sweet art.

I got me flowers to straw yhy way;

I got me boughs off many a tree:

But thou wast up by break of day,

And brought'st thy sweets along with thee.

The Sunne arising in the East,

Though he give light, and th' East perfume;

If they should offer to contest

With Thy arising, they presume.

Can there be any day but this,

Though many sunnes to shine endeavour?

We count three hundred, but we misse:

There is but one, and that one ever.

In my prayer always,

H+

Sandwich Sunday

Hello Everyone,

Our next Sandwich Sunday is scheduled for April 19 in the Church Hall. Please join us after the 10:30 service as there will be soup on offer (Soup Sunday!) and then stay to help us make some sandwiches for our friends at SMM. Make a few sandwiches or make a lot more sandwiches - any contribution is helpful. Music and good cheer will be on the menu as well.

Please sign up to participate here: https://forms.gle/FrQtuVKysN8KEtLS6

Please note that the sandwiches for this session will be PB+J. If you have peanut allergies, stay tuned for our next session!

Looking forward to seeing you,

May 3rd clean-up & May 17th Gardening

Spring is coming to St. George's and with it some exciting community initiatives!

We are looking to beautify our green spaces and we need your help.

In collaboration with our friends at St. Michael's Mission we will be having a yard clean up day following the 10:30 service on Sunday, May 3rd. A lunch will be provided by the Mission just after the service and the clean up will begin around noon!

Why the clean up? To prepare for our new garden!

Thanks to the generosity of St. Michael's Mission and their friends at Eco-quartier, we are receiving a donation of flowers to be planted throughout our front lawn. Green thumb or not, we encourage you to join us following the 10:30 service on May 17th to help bring this garden to life.

We welcome personal plant donations as well! If you have any extra annuals, please bring them. The more flowers the merrier! Additionally, we encourage you to bring gardening gloves if you have them.

With thanks and excitement,

Grace, Eli (St. George's) & Emma (Saint Michael's Mission)

"Burst" into Spring Update

Greetings from the Stewardship Committee!

We are officially two weeks into our Burst into Spring Campaign! Many thanks to those who have donated so far. As of Tuesday April 7, we have raised $2,550 in cash and cheques, and 13 people have donated this way so far. On top of this, we have also received donations via CanadaHelps, but we do not have the exact numbers received from this donation method yet. We are well on our way!

We will be providing regular updates to you all as we progress. If you haven’t yet donated, please consider doing so by cash, cheque, or on CanadaHelps. We have until Pentecost Sunday May 24 to achieve our goal of $10,000. Please remember to mark your donation with the words “Burst into Spring” so ensure that the funds go to the right place.

Yours in the Risen Lord,

The Stewardship Committee (Chloe, Susan, Tom B, Tom D, Robert)

Midweek Christian Fellowship Downtown

Every Tuesday at lunchtime, Église réformée St‑Jean hosts Lunch & Lumière, a Christian lunch gathering held at Marie‑Reine‑du‑Monde Cathedral (side entrance, 1110 rue Mansfield). They meet from 12:10 to 1:00 p.m. to share a meal, read a short passage of Scripture, and enjoy relaxed, meaningful conversation.

One of the distinctive aspects of this gathering is the mix of believers from different Christian backgrounds and contexts across the city. And so this is a great chance to connect with other Christians during the week. Our gathering is conducted in French, but anglophones are very welcome and regularly attend, making this an approachable way to practice French in a friendly, Gospel‑centered environment.

A light lunch is provided (with a voluntary contribution encouraged,) though participants are also welcome to bring their own meal.

In short, it’s:

  • a shared meal with Christians from diverse backgrounds;
  • a brief, Gospel‑centered reflection;
  • warm, thoughtful conversation;
  • and a natural opportunity to practice French in a supportive setting.

No sign‑up is required. If anyone has questions, they can contact us at: lunch.stjean@erq.qc.ca

In Case You Missed It:

Extension of Tuesday Night Compline

Shawls for those in Need:

Sacred Stitches has started a new project: shawls! Given the change in weather, we will be making shawls for pastoral donation to those in need. If you are interested in getting involved, please reach out to Eli at Eli@st-georgeschurch.org

An Update from St. Michael's Mission

Hello all,

Things are warming up, and we’re definitely feeling the hope of spring in the air here at the Mission. I want to take this opportunity to send you a “save the date” for an activity we are planning with some of your community organisers at St. George’s. On Sunday May 3rd we would like to have you all with us in our space for a potluck lunch at noon after mass. This will be followed by a collective cleaning activity outside to get the grounds of the church in ship shape for the coming summer season. I will send a proper invitation with more details, but I wanted to make sure you had advanced notice. We are looking forward to it!

If you can provide donations in the coming weeks, we have the following needs for our community:

o Men’s underwear

o Sweatpants

o Shirts

o Razors

o Bodywash

o Toothbrushes and toothpaste

As usual we also are very happy to receive tupperware, yogurt containers, empty pill containers, etc… (for distributions of food, shampoo, etc…).

If you have a lot of stuff to bring to us, you can use our in-kind donations form HERE or on our website to let us know you’re coming by.

We also have a new Amazon Wishlist that you can find HERE to get a better idea of some of our more pressing needs.

And, as always, you are welcome to drop in and say hello!

Until next time!

Emma

Ben Dear St. George's, Holy Week is upon us -- the week that we remember again the mighty acts of God which achieved our salvation, reconciling us to God and to each other. We meditate on Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, the true King entering on a donkey, the symbol of peace. We ponder Jesus' Last Supper with his disciples, in which he instituted the sacrament of Holy...

Weekly Newsletter March 20th, 2026 The Raising of Lazarus, by James Martin A Note from Rev. Holly Dear St George’s, My preoccupation, both in ceramics and in the spiritual life, is about finding meaning in death in our context… and through that, to discover new meaning in life. It isn’t just the Tibetan Buddhists who have an amazing monastic tradition of meditating on one’s death. In the Benedictine tradition, monks are taught to remember death daily as a meditation. It’s called Memento Mori....
