Sower at Sunset, Vincent Van Gogh, 1888
A Note from Rev'd John
This Sunday's readings remind us that the deepest questions of faith are not simply about right beliefs or right actions, but about the orientation of the human heart. Esau's impulsive bargain, Paul's assurance that we are called to live by the Spirit, and Jesus' parable of the sower all invite us to ask: What is shaping our deepest desires?
Our culture often assumes that the answer to dissatisfaction is to acquire something else—a better job, a new relationship, another achievement, or the next purchase. Yet anyone who has lived for long knows the pattern. One desire is fulfilled, only to be replaced by another. The sixteenth-century mystic St. John of the Cross saw this clearly. He argued that the problem is not that we desire too much, but that our desires become attached to things that cannot bear the weight of our deepest longings. The heart keeps searching because it was created for something more.
The spiritual life, then, is not about extinguishing desire but about reordering it. As our loves become rightly ordered, the countless desires that pull us in different directions gradually find their center in God. St. Teresa of Ávila put it succinctly: God alone suffices. Or St. Augustine: O Lord, our hearts are restless until they rest in you.
Perhaps that is the invitation in this Sunday's readings. The question is not whether we desire, but what our desires are making of us. When our hearts become good soil, desire itself is transformed. Instead of grasping for what is temporary, we begin to bear the enduring fruit of lives rooted in the love of God.
