Weekly Newsletter

A Note from Rev'd Heather

Dear St George’s,

I would be remiss not to begin this newsletter by acknowledging the collective grief and outrage that enveloped our city this week. On Monday three people died in Cote-de-neige due to gun violence. Our prayers go out to everyone affected by this horrific incident. To the bystanders, to the families of those who died, and to all those whose fragile sense of safety have been scarred.

The celebrations of this year's Jean-Baptiste Day, this past Wednesday, felt a little more somber, a little more tentative and cautious - at least they did to me.

I have been drawn lately toward a concept that I was introduced to by our Vicar General, the Venerable Dr. Deborah Meister. One that shifts the conversation from creating safe spaces toward creating brave spaces. Please do not mistake me - I remain committed to ensuring the highest standard of safety that it is within our ability to enforce but, there is so much that is beyond our control.

In this city, in the world, in our lives, in our very churchyard there is much that is beyond our control. Yet, God’s promises remain steadfast and true - we are not in this alone. God is with us. To quote Matthew 28:

“And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

When we face weeks like this one - with shootings in our city and flaming recycling bins in our church year - I pray that this passage will settle on your shoulders like a blanket, or the arm of a loved one, or perhaps like a prayer shawl stitched with love by our own Sacred Stitches.

Faith grants us the tools to face this world as it actually is and the courage to find beauty in the world around us, in the faces of others who are just as fearfully and wonderfully made as we are, in the wonders of Creation - in our parks and green spaces - and in the creativity and surprising facets of other’s perspectives.

Yours in a positivity born of Christ that does not edit out the realities of this world,

H+

An Update from St. Michael's Mission

Hello all,

Summer is very officially here! I hope you have all been enjoying the weather and the activities in and around the neighbourhood so far. I would like to take a moment this week to announce the launch of our Community Brigade program, in partnership with the Peter-McGill Community Table. This week was our first week of having teams of our beneficiaries helping out in the neighbourhood with anything from food banks, to street cleaning, to helping out St. George’s with the outdoor spaces***. You’ll be seeing our teams around on Tuesday and Thursday mornings for the whole summer led by our dedicated Intervention worker, Gaafar (front and center). If you have any community activities you would like to propose for our teams, feel free to send me an email.

Emma Campbell: ecampbell@stmichaelsmission.ca

If you can provide donations in the coming weeks, we have the following needs for our community:

  • Men’s underwear
  • Pants
  • Shorts
  • T-shirts
  • Razors
  • Bottles of water
  • Toothbrushes and toothpaste
  • Running shoes

As usual we also are very happy to receive tupperware, yogurt containers, empty pill containers,

etc… (for distributions of food, shampoo, etc…).

If you have a lot of stuff to bring to us, you can use our in-kind donations form HERE or on our website to let us know you’re coming by.

We also have a new Amazon Wishlist that you can find HERE to get a better idea of some of our more pressing needs.

And, as always, you are welcome to drop in and say hello!

Until next time!

Emma

Weekly Newsletter Sower at Sunset, Vincent Van Gogh, 1888 A Note from Rev'd John This Sunday's readings remind us that the deepest questions of faith are not simply about right beliefs or right actions, but about the orientation of the human heart. Esau's impulsive bargain, Paul's assurance that we are called to live by the Spirit, and Jesus' parable of the sower all invite us to ask: What is shaping our deepest desires? Our culture often assumes that the answer to dissatisfaction is to...
