A Note from Rev'd Heather

Dear St George’s,

On Sunday we will celebrate Pentecost together. We celebrate this important feast of the church every year - long ago - we celebrated Pentacost for an entire Octave but today it marks the end of the Eastertide and the beginning of the largest season of the year - “Ordinary Time” or as the Godly Play folks affectionately and propetically call it, “The Green Growing Season.”

This year, as we prepare our own celebrations, I am struck by what a joy it is to come together to celebrate what is so often referred to as the Birthday of the Church. These past few weeks have been unique in our neighbourhood, with the Habs in the running for the Stanley Cup we have seen thousands of people descend on our little part of Montreal full of excitement and expectation. The videos online show our church surrounded by a sea of red jerseys. I wonder how many fans take a moment amid the fireworks and chants (SPVM released a call today to remind everyone that fireworks are indeed interdit) to notice St George’s standing solidly and bearing witness, reminding us of Christ’s love for this world.

Poet and theologian Malcolm Guite has a poem for Pentecost that in many ways seems to take on new meaning when looking out at the infrastructure going up to support the playoffs and the city’s yearly F1 festivities:

Pentecost
Today we feel the wind beneath our wings
Today the hidden fountain flows and plays
Today the church draws breath at last and sings
As every flame becomes a Tongue of praise.
This is the feast of fire, air, and water
Poured out and breathed and kindled into earth.
The earth herself awakens to her maker
And is translated out of death to birth.
The right words come today in their right order
And every word spells freedom and release
Today the gospel crosses every border
All tongues are loosened by the Prince of Peace
Today the lost are found in His translation.
Whose mother tongue is Love in every nation.
Please, St George’s take care not to be annoyed by the inconvenience of this crowd but instead let your hearts be warmed by it. Take the time to pray for them. To ask for God’s blessings on our neighbours and ourselves - that together we might image a better and more loving world. That the sea of red jerseys may be harbingers of the tongues of fire that blessed those early disciples.

An Update from St. Michael's Mission

Hello all,

I want to extend a very very big thank you to all the folks who helped out with the cleaning activity on May 3rd and with the gardening activity last weekend. I am looking forward to seeing our garden grow alongside other projects, and collaborations that may sprout up in the coming months. Please don't be shy to share any thoughts or ideas you may have.

If you can provide donations in the coming weeks, we have the following needs for our community:

Men’s underwear, Sweatpants, Shirts, Razors, Bodywash, Toothbrushes and toothpaste, and Running shoes.

As usual we also are very happy to receive tupperware, yogurt containers, empty pill containers, etc… (for distributions of food, shampoo, etc…).

If you have a lot of stuff to bring to us, you can use our in-kind donations form HERE or on our website to let us know you’re coming by.

We also have a new Amazon Wishlist that you can find HERE to get a better idea of some of our more pressing needs.

And, as always, you are welcome to drop in and say hello!

Until next time!

Emma

Weekly Newsletter May 26th, 2026 A Note from Rev'd Holly Dear St George’s, How do you experience the world of creation? And more particularly, in this time of anxiety and fear and grief concerning the future of our planet in the face of climate change, what are your parables of contemplation of creation? In a two-part webinar I watched recently, a Canadian Jesuit named John McCarthy asks these questions. He is a boreal forest and lichen scientist, from Newfoundland. And he is also a man of...

Weekly Newsletter May 15th, 2026 A Note from Rev'd Ben Dear St George’s, Hello from Prince Edward Island! Sarah and I are having a wonderful time here getting some writing done and exploring another part of Canada. We’ve made the requisite pilgrimage to Green Gables (see the photo above) and have enjoyed lots of walks along the water. On the traditional Anglican calendar, last Sunday was Rogation Sunday, and Monday through Wednesday of this week were Rogation Days - days traditionally set...
