In Memoriam

A Note from Rev'd Holly on Brenda Jackson's Passing

Gladden the soul of your servant,
For to you, O Lord, I lift up my soul…
In the time of my trouble, I will call upon you,
For you will answer me…
For you are great; you do wondrous things;
And you alone are God. Psalm 86:4,7,10.

These verses from the psalm appointed for this coming Sunday spoke to me of the faith of a dear sister we lost this past Friday. Brenda Jackson came to St George’s a number of years ago and found here a loving community. Below are responses of two others from St George’s to the news of her death.

Susan Mcintosh writes:

I especially remember and honour Brenda because, despite her health limitations, she continued to be an active member of St. George's Church via Zoom services and the online coffee hour.  She was also a founding member of the Diversity within Community group which engaged in examining racial issues in Canada.  The group also hosted online book discussions.  These discussions attracted both members of the church and the public.

And The Rev’d Debbie Noonan, our former Interim Priest writes:

I will always remember when she came to talk to the Sunday School about her time serving in the Canadian military, one of very few women and, at a time, where she encountered no other black women.

Brenda was quiet but her faith ran deep. Her photograph says much about her sense of wonder in life; her love of family and simple pleasures, her intelligence and curiosity, her dry wit that got us laughing with her, but never at another’s expense.

She wanted to be buried from the place where her father had his funeral in 2022. So, it will not be in St George’s Church. The date and other details of the funeral are listed below. If you can, come to the funeral. Both to grieve with the family in our loss, and to renew our hope in the Resurrection as, with confidence and joy, we commend her to God’s loving care.

Weekly Newsletter Sower at Sunset, Vincent Van Gogh, 1888 A Note from Rev'd John This Sunday's readings remind us that the deepest questions of faith are not simply about right beliefs or right actions, but about the orientation of the human heart. Esau's impulsive bargain, Paul's assurance that we are called to live by the Spirit, and Jesus' parable of the sower all invite us to ask: What is shaping our deepest desires? Our culture often assumes that the answer to dissatisfaction is to...

A Note from Rev'd Heather Dear St George’s, I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you were able to make the most of the past two weeks. Two Holiday Wednesdays in a row is a rare treat! This week, it is important to draw our attention once again to those most vulnerable in our communities. We are officially in the first Heat Wave of the summer. To that...

Weekly Newsletter A Note from Rev'd Heather Dear St George’s, I would be remiss not to begin this newsletter by acknowledging the collective grief and outrage that enveloped our city this week. On Monday three people died in Cote-de-neige due to gun violence. Our prayers go out to everyone affected by this horrific incident. To the bystanders, to the families of those who died, and to all those whose fragile sense of safety have been scarred. The celebrations of this year's Jean-Baptiste Day,...
