A Note from Rev'd Heather
Dear St George’s
Summer has well and truly arrived! With vibrant festivals and celebrations in our city, we are so blessed to be where we are in the very heart of downtown - a beautiful park on one side, a metro station and the Bell Centre on the other. We really are in the very centre of things.
This puts us in a unique position. Our building stands as a powerful reminder of the Christian faith. We are particular. An Anglican church in the heart of Montreal, QC, that is almost as old as Canada itself (the doors of this St George’s church first opened our doors in 1870). But what really makes us special is our congregation - a group of humans - a community - that has been worshipping together since 1843 (when we worshipped in the old building on Rue Guy). Generations have worshiped in our pews, millions of people have walked by the church, and, whether they knew it or not, they were and are covered in prayer by the community that our building represents. When I first received the job offer to serve here, I proudly told my Dad that I was going to be the Priest at the church from Hockey Night in Canada, but what I didn’t know then was just how much I would love serving the people here.
All of this is true - and it is also true that we are in the middle of a restoration project with uncertain funding and that our yard has become a place where the crisis of homelessness that is facing our city is particularly visible. It will not surprise those of you who frequent the building that it is a struggle to keep things safe and clean. We are so blessed to have St Michael’s Mission in our building to reach out to the community as alone we do not have the resources necessary to address the sheer volume and complexity of the need that surrounds us.
There has never been an easy time to be the church, but I am grateful that this is our time. On our own, we cannot solve homelessness and we cannot fund the necessary work on our building, but we can do the very thing we do best. We can be a community that points to and follows after Christ. We can seek to uphold and support human dignity for all who cross our path. And we can trust that in those things that we can and do do, that God is with us, and is stretching out a mighty arm to continue to work wonders through and in us.
Please join me in praying for our community that we might rise to the challenges before us with grace and conviction.
Yours in Christ,
H+

Weekly Newsletter Sower at Sunset, Vincent Van Gogh, 1888 A Note from Rev'd John This Sunday's readings remind us that the deepest questions of faith are not simply about right beliefs or right actions, but about the orientation of the human heart. Esau's impulsive bargain, Paul's assurance that we are called to live by the Spirit, and Jesus' parable of the sower all invite us to ask: What is shaping our deepest desires? Our culture often assumes that the answer to dissatisfaction is to...
Weekly Newsletter Rebecca at the Well, On the left Abraham's servant meets Rebecca at a well in Mesopotamia. Date:1140-1170, Mosaic. A Note from Rev'd Heather Dear St George’s, I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you were able to make the most of the past two weeks. Two Holiday Wednesdays in a row is a rare treat! This week, it is important to draw our attention once again to those most vulnerable in our communities. We are officially in the first Heat Wave of the summer. To that...
Weekly Newsletter A Note from Rev'd Heather Dear St George’s, I would be remiss not to begin this newsletter by acknowledging the collective grief and outrage that enveloped our city this week. On Monday three people died in Cote-de-neige due to gun violence. Our prayers go out to everyone affected by this horrific incident. To the bystanders, to the families of those who died, and to all those whose fragile sense of safety have been scarred. The celebrations of this year's Jean-Baptiste Day,...
