A Note from Rev'd Ben

Dear St. George’s,

Our readings for this coming Sunday take us into one of the questions at the heart of our faith: what determines our standing before God? It’s so easy to think that how God views us is based on our performance. In our jobs or at school, after all, this is how it works: you have to perform well to get the good grade or the raise or the promotion. But with God, it’s different. This is what Paul tells us in the portion from the Letter to the Romans we will read on Sunday: we don’t have to earn our way into God’s good books by piling up virtuous deeds. Rather, our standing before God rests on what Jesus has done for us. And we receive what Jesus has done for us precisely when we receive it as a gift, receive it on trust, receive it not as something we have earned or deserved but as something that God gives us just for his sheer love for us. This means that the neat sort of divisions that the Pharisees try to make in our Gospel reading today, with ‘good people’ on one side and ‘sinners’ on the other, has no place in Jesus’ kingdom. All of us come to God solely and entirely based on his grace. May we rest in the truth of this glorious good news, today and always!

Yours in Christ,
Ben

Weekly Newsletter Sower at Sunset, Vincent Van Gogh, 1888 A Note from Rev'd John This Sunday's readings remind us that the deepest questions of faith are not simply about right beliefs or right actions, but about the orientation of the human heart. Esau's impulsive bargain, Paul's assurance that we are called to live by the Spirit, and Jesus' parable of the sower all invite us to ask: What is shaping our deepest desires? Our culture often assumes that the answer to dissatisfaction is to...

A Note from Rev'd Heather Dear St George’s, I hope this newsletter finds you well and that you were able to make the most of the past two weeks. Two Holiday Wednesdays in a row is a rare treat! This week, it is important to draw our attention once again to those most vulnerable in our communities. We are officially in the first Heat Wave of the summer. To that...

Weekly Newsletter A Note from Rev'd Heather Dear St George’s, I would be remiss not to begin this newsletter by acknowledging the collective grief and outrage that enveloped our city this week. On Monday three people died in Cote-de-neige due to gun violence. Our prayers go out to everyone affected by this horrific incident. To the bystanders, to the families of those who died, and to all those whose fragile sense of safety have been scarred. The celebrations of this year's Jean-Baptiste Day,...
